MoNA - Museum of New Art

YEAR: 2000

The Museum of New Art, Detroit's first contemporary museum, moved into its space with help from some 200 artists from around the world. The artists, including Yoko Ono, Christo, and Sol Lewitt donated works for auction in order to generate operating revenues and construction funds for the museum. Envisioned as a non-profit forum forcontemporary art, MoNA called attention to Detroit and put the city's art into an international context, growing since.

The 10,000 sf space existed for two years, galvanizing the arts scene with many openings hosting over 1,000 people. The space was built out for $40,000, leaving the existing space as-is above the datum of walls added for display and definition of gallery spaces.
