Mad Nice

CLIENT: Heirloom Hospitality
LOCATION: Detroit MI
YEAR: 2019-2023

When McIntosh Poris Architects (MPA) was approached to transform a historic 1930s Midtown Detroit building into Mad Nice, an upscale Italian restaurant, it felt like coming full circle. We previously adapted the space from a 1950s supermarket to Will Leather Goods in 2014. Reimagining it as a vibrant dining venue allowed us to build on our deep understanding of its history. The design aimed to blend Italian soul, West Coast vibes, and Detroit grit, creating a bright, airy, warm environment inspired by coastal Italy and Palm Springs glamour.

Located in Detroit’s historic district, the project involved balancing modern interventions with preservation, including a 1,535-square-foot addition. We incorporated industrial materials like brick, steel, and glazed block, complementing large windows and skylights to flood the space with natural light. The triangular bar, outdoor patio, and retail area, Mad Nice Goods, foster community and engagement. Collaborating with interior firm Parini, we achieved a cohesive, storytelling space that celebrates Detroit’s industrial heritage while offering a fresh, inviting destination.
