6568 Woodward

CLIENT: Midtown Detroit, Inc.
LOCATION: Detroit, MI
YEAR: 2016-2018

The building has been partially occupied for the past 20 years and received Federal Historic Tax Credits for its complete renovation for a new corner restaurant, ground floor retail, second floor offices and 10 market rate apartments on the third floor. The design sensitively respects the historic fabric of 6568 Woodward by preserving many original architectural elements and highlighting them through a contemporary renovation that gives a nod to the past.

The exterior of the historic building is restored and the interiors transformed to house new office, a ground-floor corner restaurant, and 10 artists’ live/work apartments on the third floor. The second- and third-floor hallways were restored with many of the existing doors being used as unit entry doors. Deteriorated brick on the exterior façades was repaired and repainted in the color of the original masonry.

A green roof terrace was added as an amenity for the offices with an area for growing fresh herbs for the restaurant.
