Originally designed in 1970 by a notable local architect as his own family home, this 3,800-square-foot midcentury modern residence perches dramatically on the edge of a ravine. Its geometric, vertically oriented form reads as two stories from the street but rises four stories at the rear, connected by twin towers—one with a spiral stair, the other with an elevator.
The new owners approached the project as stewards of this significant work, seeking to adapt it for contemporary living while preserving its architectural integrity. The design team restored the home’s exterior character with paint closely matching the original palette and reinstated a rear deck that now appears to float, extending the interior living space through expansive sliding glass doors. A new kitchen-side deck and reimagined landscaping strengthen the home’s connection to its steep, wooded site.
Inside, a dramatic two-story bookcase with a rolling ladder rises from the lowest level, while enhanced lighting highlights the sculptural spiral stair. The kitchen received subtle finish updates; new wood flooring replaced carpet on the upper level; and solar film was added to reduce heat gain. The expanded primary bath now features a fully tiled wet room with a curbless shower, freestanding tub, and a new vanity inspired by the original, naturally lit by a new skylight.
Throughout, restored transparency, layered decks, and vertical connections celebrate the home’s original design intent—creating a luminous, dynamic environment deeply attuned to its ravine setting.
